DOWNTOWN KIRKWOOD ADVISORY COMMISSION

Serve on the Downtown Kirkwood Advisory Commission

If you are a property owner or business owner or manager of a municipally-licensed business within the boundaries of the Downtown Kirkwood Special Business District (SBD), then you are eligible to serve on the Downtown Kirkwood Advisory Commission (DKAC). Terms on the commission are three years. No commissioner can serve more than two consecutive terms. Serving on the commission can be both personally and professionally rewarding.

The commission meets the third Wednesday of each month beginning at 8:00 a.m. at Kirkwood City Hall. The meetings are usually about 75- 90 minutes.

The Role of a Downtown Kirkwood Advisory Commissioner

Advisory Commissioners work with the SBD staff to make Downtown Kirkwood the most vibrant regional destination for shopping, dining, living, and working. Advisory Commissioners help support the district’s mission to promote business and support the community through innovative cultural, social, and economic opportunities that benefit our membership.

The DKAC sets strategic goals and allocates the budget for the downtown Kirkwood organization and then submits the district’s budget to the city council for approval.

The Opportunities and Benefits of Service

As a member of the DKAC, you will have the opportunity to meet and work with other downtown Kirkwood business people, elected officials, and others that you would not have had the pleasure of knowing if you didn’t serve on the commission. Plus, you can gain valuable perspective on the challenges and rewards of running a business that is not related to your own. And, you will also gain an increased appreciation of what it means to be part of an organization that promotes and enhances downtown Kirkwood and the community.

The Process

Candidates for the DKAC are nominated by the Nominating Committee and approved by the DKAC. Then, candidates’ names are placed on a ballot that is mailed to all the members of the Special Business District. After the votes are tallied, the candidates’ names with the most votes are submitted to the Kirkwood City Council for consideration and official appointment to the Downtown Kirkwood Advisory Commission.

Please contact Downtown Kirkwood SBD Executive Director Donna Poe at depoe@downtownkirkwood.com to express interest in serving on the commission. Your name and interest in serving will be forwarded to the Downtown Kirkwood Advisory Commission’s Nominating Committee.
